First night out in Melbourne I took the street car along St. Kilda to the Flinders Station. Out the apartment, along Barbarino’s and onto St. Kilda Road.
Trams, trains, buses, cars, bicyclists, everyone in Melbourne must take St. Kilda Road. The subway trains are at Flinders Station — where I’m headed.
Actually, ‘474 St Kilda Road is located directly along Melbourne’s busiest tram corridor, situated between Commercial Road/Toorak Road and Union Street.’
Hang ‘on! Those reviews don’t describe St. Kilda Road at all. The 470 block, where I started from was all tree lined and the journey to Flinders Station traveled along the _____ park, the Shrine___, another park and across the Yarra River.
Flinders Station
You must realize that I was forewarned that Australians may not take kindly to those from across the pond. A must read is my post related to Ozzie’s and All-Stars, although there were a couple assholes I ran into.
At any rate, that thought was completely out of my mind at the time I stepped up to the bar and ordered a ‘glass of beer’. Upon arrival I noticed those drinking to both my left and right obviously had larger beers.
I ordered another glass to see if maybe it was all nothing. It also came at the smaller size. Okay. so what exactly should I do about this… Calling out the bartender wouldn’t be the smartest play, so maybe the best plan is to just drink up my losses, go on about my day and not return to this bar again. There are plenty of other bars to get insulted at, and it’s still early.
At some point thereafter, during my stay in Oz, at some bar or restaurant, the light shined, an epiphany some might call it, a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple, homely, or commonplace occurrence or experience.
Although it’s not very intuitive if someone needs to tell you. However the knowledge was gained, I gained it, and that’s the important thing.
It was about as simple as basic arithmetic: a glass was smaller in size and contains 10 fl oz while a pint (which every adult (but me) was ordering) was a larger size beer starting at 15 fl oz, with the imperial pint holding 20 fl oz.
So again, the importance of math.
